Showing Results

Having clear goals gives foundations a measuring stick for their own performance, and allows them to demonstrate their value in tangible ways. But quantitatively evaluating impact can be difficult.

Collins says it's more about tracking progress with as much real evidence - quantitative or qualitative - as possible. The question is "How effectively do we deliver on our mission and make a distinctive impact, relative to our resources?" One of the more effective approaches is to gather stories from grantees that communicate the substance of what foundations do on a heart level.

Rather than talking about how they were helpful, leading foundations tell stories about the people their funding has helped, which connects with their audiences emotionally. It also helps leverage funding for grantees, because more people give for emotional rather than intellectual reasons.

Showing results attracts further support and commitment from critical audiences. When people start to see tangible results from organization, they are more likely to offer time and resources, which in turn enhances reputation and leads to even greater impact.
